EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH THE NIGERIAN EUROPEAN AWARD WINNING BEST HIP HOP ARTIST, YOUNG CRHYME A.K.A. MONEY MENDOZA
NEUMAG: Hello YC, it’s a great honour to have you on our Magazine, Naija EU Magazine
YC : Thank you, its a great honour to be here with you.
NEUMAG: We see you are a hardworking African doing us proud in diaspora, musically. Tell us how you came into music
YC: I started doing Music with a group of friends in 1996. 10 years later I started my solo Career in 2006. And since then I've been doing my thing.
NEUMAG: What ran through your mind when you received the letter of Nomination from Naija EU Awards
YC: My 1st thought was simply, yeeesssss I really made it. Thank u Lord.
NEUMAG: How has been the reactions of your fans, friends and family since you bagged the Award for Best Hip Hop Artist in Europe.
YC: The Feedback from my fans , friends and family has been great. Everybody congratulated me and wished me all the best for the Future. Everybody knew that my hard work would pay off one day.
NEUMAG: From our personal look into your musical carrear, we have found out that your personality and music has been accepted fully in Europe, what do you think about that?
YC: I rather would say respected but not accepted everywhere (so far). Alot of German People who working in the German Hip Hop scene just accept Black Artists from the US. They dont know any better. But its getting better everyday.
NEUMAG: Tell us about your recent and past projects
YC: My current CD (Mixtape) DIARY OF A MADE MENdoza sold about 2.000 copies. I got Artists like Snoop Dogg and Dante Thomas on it. I collaborated with Hennessy for a Shortmovie aswell. Right now Im working on my debut album called ONLY GOD CAN STOP ME. Artists like Mopreme Shakur , Dante Thomas , Hussein Fatal (Outlawz) and many more will feature on the album.
NEUMAG: We also learnt that you have featured/Acted in some German Movies. Tell us about these movies.
YC: Yes I played two short roles in two movies from Lars Becker coming soon on ZDF (German TV station). Im very excited because it was something new for me.
NEUMAG: Your song was also a soundtrack of a film, how did you get your song to be featured in a German film.
YC: Hahaha, it was a Police Soap (Großstadt Revier). The Soap is known all over Germany. They took 3 of my Songs for an episode. It was a honour for me.
NEUMAG: Tell us about your Tupac Shakur Project that took you to the US to work with Tupac’s Big Brother, Mopreme Shakur.
YC: 1st of all Im a fan of Tupac's music. I've been listining to his music over 20 years now. So its more than an honor for me to do a Tribute track for Tupac Amaru Shakur with one of his family members. Mopreme Shakur follows me on Twitter so we had our 1st conversations via this Social Network. I told him everything about my plans and he really liked my ideas. So we made the track (called I miss your Brother) and shot the Video like 2 months later in Los Angeles.
NEUMAG: You are also known as Money Mendoza, Tell us in a nutshell how you got the name.
YC: After I started my solo career in 2006 I needed something new. People knew me as Young CRhyme when I was in a group. So I thought I need a new name (not Identity) to start off with something fresh. So I got the Name Money Mendoza because I wanted to make money for my Family and Friends. The Mendoza just matched perfect. No deeper meaning in that.
NEUMAG: Your stage perfomances has been huge, browsing through the social network, we found your performances on big stages also alongside great Artists. How do you get such opportunities.
YC: hahahaha .. Sometimes its connection, sometimes its luck. GOD works in misterious ways.
NEUMAG: Please tell us how you built your huge fan base so that other Artists will learn from you.
YC: Hard work and dedication. You got to be focused and you got to have stamina in this business. Dont look left and right what other artist do or what People say about you and your music. Believe in your self and be realistic about your music. Dont overhype yourself and try to be better with every song.
NEUMAG: Your Video Clips are always classic, do you direct them yourself?
YC: Most of the times. 95% of my videos
NEUMAG: Your Fans has been of great help to your carrear, use this medium to talk to them.
YC: I really thank EACH and EVERYONE who has been supporting me since they came intouch with my music. I hope I could motivate some of my fans to move forward and never stop in life. No matter what they are doing.
